Pleasantville & "kingdom" of God

The movie "Pleasantville" shows a town that is hinged upon on evil and accepted social structures.  The entire town is in black and white to represent conformity.  It isn't until a few characters turn "colored" that more and more citizens of Pleasantville try to fight the darkness in order to bring about a society based on more virtuous ideals.
Just as the citizens of Pleasantville combat against flawed social institutions, Jesus wants us to oppose the "kingdom" of Satan in order to bring about the "kingdom" of God. We need to be able to challenge the social values that we are used to.

  1. The movie, “Pleasantville” can be used as a symbol for many larger meanings. In today’s society, just as people conformed to the norm of black and white in Pleasantville, people are conforming to the norm of sin. Lets face it, sin is commonplace. It is everywhere and is present in everyone, from children to the elderly. Crime rates with each passing year have risen exponentially. People have, it seems, turned to the “kingdom of Satan”. However, in “Pleasantville, when a couple of people became “colored”, many chose to combat the black and white norm. Perhaps if just a couple more people turned to the “kingdom of God” in this world, more people would chose to fight against the “kingdom of Satan”
